When presenting a paper to a conference, writing an effective abstract is crucial. If you've never written or considered an abstract before, here are some key points to get you started!

Structure Your Abstract Like an Introduction

Your abstract should explain why your topic matters and provide context for your research. Focus on informing readers rather than trying to be clever or overly creative.

Crafting Your Title

Your title is a key element of your abstract. Keep these guidelines in mind:

• Keep it straightforward, describe what your paper does
• Address the Who, What, Where, and Why
• When starting out, avoid catchy or clever titles clarity is more important

Present Your Argument

You should be presenting something new:

• Identify where your research lies in relation to the current status quo
  • Are you disrupting it, strengthing it, questioning it?
• Summarize your argument in one or two clear sentences
• Provide enough detail to intrigue readers, but save the deep analysis for the paper itself

Answer "So What?"

Explain why readers should care about your research.

• How does it help us understand something in a new way?
• What contribution does it make to the field?
