Proposed as a printers error originally, because Addlestone is a real location, the manuscript backs up that Addleton is correct.
In the Annotated Sherlock Holmes page 350 of Volume 2, Baring-Gould quotes Paul H. Gore-Booth, who suspected this to be a printer’s error. This could be an error on Doyle’s part, but the manuscript clearly reads “Addleton”
Gore-Booth wrote on this in the Baker Street Journal. Unfortunately I am not currently able to access this via interlibrary loan and need to wait for my archival CD to arrive in the mail. Here is the full citation in the meantime.

Approximately an hour by modern train, the is the real Addlestone.
